Keeping Clutter Under Control-
Alright. I have three boys, two dogs and a husband, so I can relate to the chaos of daily living. The one thing people notice when they come to my home is that I have very little clutter. I would like to say it is because I am an amazing, well-organized person, but the truth is I am skilled at hiding my stuff. When I purchase items for my home they have to look nice AND I have to have functional items in my home.
One of the first items you see when you enter my home is a large armoire ( aka big cabinet for the decorating challenged). It is not my favorite "Decorator Piece" but it is a great functional unit. I houses all backpacks, sports calendars, school calendars and school supplies. When it is closed it just looks like a piece of furniture with a lovely plant on top. But open it up and it is a mom's organizing station. I love it!
The other thing I really like for storage and hiding clutter are storage ottomans. I have one place in the hallways that houses all the boys football stuff. I have another in my living room that holds blankets and pillows for all of those sleep-overs and cold, rainy days.
Other good options for controlling clutter and becoming more organized are baskets and magazine racks. I keep a few baskets on my oldest son's desk. One for pens/pencils, one for misc. stuff and one for school papers. When they start to get full, we have a clean out the basket day and it is not so overwhelming as having things scattered all over the room.
I also like those decorative books that open up. These are great for decoration but they are also perfect for placing items like keys or loose change. Set one on a table by your front door and control the clutter and endless key searches.
